“Strong Economy” Headlines Don’t Always Tell the Whole Story

Economic headlines often point to a single number like GDP growth or stock market performance and suggest that everything is fine. But for investors guided by faith and purpose, it’s worth asking: Fine for whom? And for how long?

When the economy looks strong on paper, it doesn’t always reflect the lived reality of families, communities, or ministries. And it doesn’t always indicate long-term health.

What a Strong Jobs Report May Miss

In May 2025, the U.S. added 139,000 new jobs, and wage growth continued. On the surface, that’s good news. But those numbers may not reveal:

  • The types of jobs being added

  • Whether wages are keeping pace with inflation

  • How are different sectors and regions faring

For example, while private sector wages rose 0.4% in a single month, personal income overall fell, mainly due to the expiration of temporary government programs. And while employment held steady, consumer sentiment stayed below pre-2020 levels.

In other words, there is often more complexity beneath the headline.

The Market Is Not the Mission

It’s common for the stock market to rise during periods of political tension, interest rate uncertainty, or even global conflict. We’ve seen this in recent months. But market optimism doesn’t always mean stability or moral alignment.

We believe investors of faith must weigh not just how markets are moving, but why. Are short-term gains being driven by speculation, artificial tailwinds, or overlooked risks? Is your portfolio supporting companies that reflect your beliefs and priorities?

Measuring What Really Matters

At Stonecrop, we encourage clients to look beyond the headlines and focus on their personal financial convictions:

  • Are we investing in alignment with our values?

  • Are we giving generously in both prosperous and uncertain times?

  • Are we building a plan that reflects biblical principles—not just market trends?
