How to Think About Inflation (and Deflation) as a Faith-Based Investor

Inflation is one of the most commonly discussed topics in personal finance. But lately, you may have also heard more about deflation.

At a recent Morgan Stanley event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggested that artificial intelligence may drive global deflation by increasing efficiency. Meanwhile, traditional inflation metrics, like the PCE Index, continue to show modest increases.

So what does it all mean? And how might Christian investors respond in a way that reflects both wisdom and peace?

Economic Trends Will Come and Go

At Stonecrop, we believe that no single inflation reading or prediction should dictate how you manage your wealth. Inflation may rise in some seasons and fall in others. Technology may increase efficiency in some areas while creating demand in others.

The key is to understand what these changes may mean for your long-term plan, not to chase short-term signals.

When prices rise, some investors may worry about their money losing value. When prices fall, they may fear economic slowdowns or job loss. These are valid concerns. But we believe stewardship calls us to focus on what we can control: our plan, our posture, and our purpose.

The Role of a Faith-Based Financial Plan

Rather than reacting to monthly CPI or PCE reports, a well-structured plan may help you respond with confidence. That may include:

  • A portfolio designed to account for both inflationary and deflationary environments

  • Investments that aim to preserve purchasing power over time

  • Flexibility in spending and giving strategies

  • Commitment to long-term convictions

A faith-based approach does not ignore inflation or deflation. It simply places them in the proper perspective as one of many variables in a world under God's care.

Planning with Purpose, Not Panic

We believe Christian investors are called to live with peace and purpose. That includes trusting that wise, values-driven planning may weather the ups and downs of the economy.

If prices rise, we review your plan. If prices fall, we review your plan. The strategy stays centered around your calling, not the moment.
